Spanish Tragedy Rehearsals Day 4

Today began with a movement exercise based around listening and responding to music. Some beautiful stage pictures and dramatic moments were created through this improvisational session, and – all feeling inspired – we went on to explore the themes of Battle, Passion and Loss in small groups through movement. We also started to consider the stage space itself in more detail, exploring the different perspectives and moods created when using only particular areas of the stage to perform. After a well-earned break for lunch, we then went on to view research presentations prepared by the cast on various topics related to the production and the play: including The Life of Thomas Kyd, War & Politics in the 1500s and Religion & Justice. We have started to collect a veritable mine of information to help us bring this Elizabethan play to life for today’s audiences, and are looking forward to delving into text work tomorrow.
