Spanish Tragedy Rehearsals Day 6

Week two begins! After a warm up we continued with our in-depth textual analysis of the play. Through detailed reading and discussion we explored the next few episodes and lots of interesting information and clues in the text came to light. Through analysing the varying perspectives of different characters, for example, we discovered new information about the offstage death of a major character in the play: while he initially appears to have had a swift exit according to a secondary source, we soon hear further information which in fact suggests it was a slow demise as his friend endeavoured to rescue him. Such discoveries demonstrate the importance for actors of raking the text for primary and secondary information on their characters, as well as the varying “truths” present in the play as each character has their own perspective and opinion. We also noticed the huge difference in ruling styles between the Spanish King and the Portuguese Viceroy, and explored through improvisational and physical exercises the complexity of the Viceroy’s character. An interesting day – more mining of the text tomorrow!
