Spanish Tragedy Rehearsals Day 8

…and the text work continues. After our company warm up that concentrated on team building exercises, we commenced our third day of text work this week. Some revelations and plenty of surprises were had at the Lazarus Theatre Company rehearsal room today. Through careful consideration of the text, we discovered the astounding effect stillness can convey to the audience. As well as antithetically (we know Mr Kyd himself loves to think in antitheses), a very speedy delivery of text can still be fully understood when spoken with purpose, intent and thought. The character of the Viceroy of Portugal really came through in this exercise due to the immediacy of our actor playing it. Looks like the King of Spain and the Viceroy of Portugal are in fact almost the opposites of one another – one still and majestic, and the other fidgety and uncertain. Can you guess who is which?
