60 Seconds with the Cast – Elly Lowney

Give us your full name and the character you are playing.
Elly Lowney and I’m playing The Bishop of Ely….the Interpreter.
Where in the UK are you from?
Essex….but sometimes I tell people East London to avoid the inevitable Essex jokes.
What was your first theatrical experience, either on stage or in the auditorium?
Ballet school at 2 years old. I didn’t like the tutu though, it itched! There’s a picture of me on stage trying to rip it off and then scratching my arms like a monkey. You know, normal elegant ballet stuff!
What was your first experience of Shakespeare?
A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Secondary School, I thought it was loads of fun, like a party.
What was your first experience of King Henry V?
Reading it at University when I studied Literature.
What was your first thought when you heard about an all-female King Henry V?
Cool, bring it on and don’t mess with the ladies. In that order.
Tell us the title of your favourite play.
The Maids by Jean Genet, it’s about 2 maids who plot to kill their boss “Madam”. The Madam character is hilarious and ridiculous and wonderful!
Who is your theatrical inspiration?
Imelda Staunton
If you had to choose, who is your favourite female actor / actress?
Imedla Staunton of course but also really like Cate Blancett who actually played Madam in Sydney.
In King Henry V, the French Dauphin sends Harry tennis balls, what’s your favourite ball game?
