60 Seconds with the cast – Kerry Willison-Parry

Duchess of York

Give us your full name and the character you are playing.
Kerry Willison-Parry, Canterbury (The Divine)

Where in the UK are you from?
Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria

What was your first theatrical experience, either on stage or in the auditorium?
I remember being an angel in a full school nativity. I was 7 years old and I had silver wings. The angels stayed onstage for the full nativity which we did in a church. I progressed through the ranks until I got the part of the Angel Gabriel when I was 11. I got to wear the gold wings. Prior to this I had turned my parent’s garage into a performance space with an old curtain across the front and me and my friends put on a “show” for the paying public…who I think were more interested in my mum’s homemade ice lollies that were inclusive in the price of a ticket.

What was your first experience of Shakespeare?
I went to an all girl’s grammar school and we “acted out” a Shakespeare every year so I remember being 12 yrs old in a sunny classroom and pushing all the chairs and tables out of the way to clear a space to play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and I remember that it seemed so liberating and exciting to be sitting on the desks and laughing.

What was your first experience of King Henry V?
Derek and I took our young children to see Henry V performed in the open air theatre in Central Park, New York. It was very “big” and physical and exciting production. Henry V was tall and muscular and very handsome.

What was your first thought when you heard about an all-female King Henry V?
I want to be in that!

Tell us the title of your favourite play.
Waiting For Godot…or….Death of a Salesman.

Who is your theatrical inspiration?
I am completely inspired whenever I’ve seen The Royal Ballet. I’m riveted. I saw Ian McKellan when I was 14 and I knew I wanted to do whatever it was he was doing on stage.

If you had to choose, who is your favourite female actor / actress?
I love watching Anne Reid. I want to be her when I grow up.

In King Henry V, the French Dauphin sends Harry tennis balls, what’s your favourite ball game?
I love watching tennis. I love Wimbledon. I also love watching basketball and netball and I was a county hockey player and rounders player. I played for Westmorland Ladies. I also played in a mixed field hockey team. I have the scars!
