Meet the Cast – David Clayton

David Clayton

What’s your name, where you come from and who do you play?
David Clayton, born in Germany and I am playing Bottom!

What was your first theatrical experience, either on stage or in the auditorium?
When I was in primary school I was one of the Shepard’s in the school nativity and I vomited all over Jesus’ crib.

What was your first experience of A Midsummer Night’s Dream?
My first ever experience was reading it and studying it in English Lit class way back in Secondary school. Have seen some fantastic productions of it since!

What’s the main part of the production or process that you’re most excited about discovering?
I’m really looking forward to the Mechanicals’ play within the play. I don’t know what Ricky has planned but I know it will be explosive, hilarious and a lot of fun for both us and the audience.

Who’s your favourite character, other than your own?
Peter Quince, I absolutely love the banter Bottom has with him. Very much looking forward to being on stage with Mr. Slade again!

What is your favourite play?
This changes all the time but it is usually something by Philip Ridley. A tie between The Fastest Clock in the Universe and Mercry Fur, fantastic stories, world and characters.

Who is your theatrical inspiration?
I’ll go for Philip Ridley again! I love his work, I think his plays are challenging and entertaining. I’ve also heard that he’s just a really lovely guy as well!

If you had to choose, who is your favourite actor?
A very difficult question as it’s impossible to compare so many different people and performances. If I had to pick I think I’d say Gemma Whealan, I saw her do an amazing one woman show in Edinburgh and was absolutely blown away by her skill – to keep an audience enthralled for an hour and a half all by yourself is such a mammoth task; one which she pulled of perfectly.

What’s your favourite colour?
Leopard Print

What’s the craziest dream you’ve ever had?
I’ve had far too many to pick just one! During rehearsals I dreamt I was the goal-keeper for England and did really well right up until the last minute when I conceded resulting in a 1-0 defeat in the world cup. Everyone throughout the country was extremely upset with me and I thought it very unfair.
