Meet the Cast – Samuel Lane

Samuel Lane

Give us your full name and the character you are playing.
Samuel Lane. Lucentio.

Where in the world are you from?
The Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales

What was your first theatrical experience, either on stage or in the auditorium?
I’m not sure if it was my first; but the first one I can remember is going to the Blues Brothers Live Stage Show at The New Theatre in Cardiff. Me, my brother & dad knew all the moves to “Shake Your Tail Feather”

What was your first experience of Shakespeare?
I played Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet in Year 9. It went to the Shakespeare for schools festival. I managed to perform in that before studying Hamlet at GCSE. I much preferred performing in it.

What’s the event in the play that you’re most excited about discovering?
It’s not necessarily an event; but I’m really excited about discovering the friendship with Tranio. Lucentio & Tranio are a bit of a double act, it’ll be nice to find that with another actor.

Who’s your favourite character, other than your own?
Petruchio; I think he’d just be such a fascinating character to play. There’s a lot going on there & to find the reasons, in relation to a modern day audience, why he does the things he does, whilst still making him likeable, would be a real challenge. I think it’d be a fun one though. He’s the kind of guy you love to hate.

Tell us the title of your favourite play.
If I was going to go for a Shakespeare it’d be a toss up between Julius Caesar & Henry V. Too close to call.

Who is your theatrical inspiration?
I love Shakespeare (obviously), big fan of Marlowe too. Looking at more modern times I’d say Jez Butterworth – or there’s a brilliant playwright called Barney Norris. The work he does fascinates me. Making the ordinary exceptional!

If you had to choose, who is your favourite actor?
Robin Williams.

What’s your favourite festival experience?
Jeremy Corbyn & Glastonbury. No way I could get through one of these without getting political.
